European Parliament — European Urban Forum: Perspectives for Sustainable Urban Mobility in the EU

Invited to speak at the European Parliament by MEP Marcos Ros Sempere, Fabienne Keller and Nikolina Brnjac, leading the European Urban Forum, to discuss sustainable urban mobility with fellow speaker George Xenokratis from Bolt.

My key message: Sustainable mobility must be inclusive mobility.
If we want greener, healthier, climate-resilient cities — especially as we face heatwaves and other climate challenges — we must design transport systems that work for women, families, and everyone for whom mobility remains a daily struggle.
I also shared the work of Femmes en Mouvementand Famimob, including Her Way — our awareness workshop that helps stakeholders experience gendered mobility barriers and identify concrete solutions.

My 3 takeaways:

1. Moving freely is a basic human right.
   Without equitable mobility, many are excluded from opportunity, safety, and full participation in society.

2. Change starts with gender-disaggregated data.
   We need to make the invisible visible — only then can we assess what works and drive real progress.

3. In four generations, children’s autonomous movement has shrunk from 10 km to... just 300 m.
   The increased need for supervision falls mostly on women, limiting their own mobility.
